HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY FREE CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHEET

Recently, I asked my Vial Design Insiders (if you’re not one yet, make sure you get amongst them here) what was something they were struggling with regards to their calligraphy journey and what was something they’d like to see more in my blog. One of the things that kept coming up was to learn how to letter phrases or sentiments so they could make cards!

Since practicing new words is a great way to improve your lettering and calligraphy, I want to help you do just that! That’s why I created this Mother’s Day Free Calligraphy Worksheet you can use to get your practice going.

If you’ve been struggling or have been wanting to learn something new about calligraphy, you can let me know by filling out this short survey

SUPPLIES I RECOMMEND FOR THIS FREE PRACTICE WORKSHEET

First, I’d like to discuss the tools you’ll need to put these worksheets to good use. I want to make sure you have the right tools, so you’re successful with your practice and avoid some frustration.

  • Paper: I recommend HP Premium32 Paper because of its higher quality, which is excellent for your brush pens. Or you can also use tracing paper and put it on to of your worksheet to practice. This way, you only need to print the sheet once and still practice several times.
  • Monoline pen: The Faux Calligraphy part of the worksheet can be done with any regular pen. I prefer the Staedtler Triplus Fineliner, which I use for my everyday writing. The Tombo MONO drawing pen #05 is another excellent choice for this part of the worksheet.
  • Brush Pen (Small Tip): The second part of the worksheet is for small brush pen calligraphy. I designed this worksheet with the Tombow Fudenosuke Hard Tip in mind because it’s one of the pens I recommend them for beginners. The Tombow Fudenosuke also comes in a soft tip and colors, which gives you have different options. Another great small tip brush pens you can use are the Pentel Fude Brush Pens.
  • Brush Pen (Large Tip): You can use any large brush pen for the third part of the worksheet. I do prefer the Tombow Dual Brush pens or the Sharpie Stained Brush Markers.
  • My FREE Calligraphy Practice Worksheet. To get access to it, fill out the form in the form of this blog post. Or go directly to my resource library, where I keep all my Free Calligraphy Practice Worksheets, printables, and more!

For a complete list of supplies I recommend for beginners in brush pen calligraphy, make sure to check this blog post. I also go in detail of the best brush pens I recommend for beginners in this other blog post.

CALLIGRAPHY PRACTICE TIPS

As you’re using this calligraphy practice worksheet, keep in mind the tips below. These will make you make the most out of your practice. For more practice tips for beginners, check out this blog post.

  1. SUPER IMPORTANT: Slow down! Take your time when you’re practicing your calligraphy. Doing calligraphy is not meant to be fast. Going slow will help you get better letterforms and sharper strokes.
  2. Date your worksheets! This is a great way to see your improvement. Refer back to your older sheets often. Especially when you start to get into the comparison trap or when you think you haven’t improved in your calligraphy journey. We are our worst critics! And often forget to give us grace and celebrate our accomplishments, no matter how small they are.
  3. Use light pressure for the upstrokes (when you’re moving the pen upwards) and heavy pressure for the downstrokes (when you’re moving the pen upwards).
  4. Find a comfortable position and take breaks if you need to.
  5. Lift your pen between each stroke as you’re practicing the letterforms.
  6. Adjust your page and posture from time to time.
  7. Don’t forget to slow down! I know I’ve already said it, but we often tend to forget 😉

Here are some ideas of what you can letter once you practice using my calligraphy worksheets:
