HOW TO PRINT YOUR CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHEETS AFFORDABLY

The great thing about digital downloads like my Modern Calligraphy Workbook or the many free worksheets I offer in my resource library is that you can have access to them immediately. The ugly side of it is that sometimes, ink can be expensive. 

For the longest time, I resigned myself to printing beautiful worksheets in black and white, because it was cheaper. I just couldn’t bring myself to printing in color, unless it was absolutely necessary because I didn’t feel like spending a mini fortune buying ink. 

I’m super excited to share with you a FREE or super affordable way of printing your lettering worksheets and other colorful printables. 

09/21/2021: UPDATE: HP instant ink program updated their pricing and the lowest tear is $0.99 USD. This is still incredible pricing if you only print a few pages a month. I still have the next tear pricing and use my printer ALL THE TIME. Even with this price increase, I 100% recommend this program.

WHAT I TRIED BEFORE HP INSTANT INK

For the longest time, I had a love-hate relationship with my HP printer. I love the printing quality it had, but I hated how fast it ran through ink and how expensive it was to replace it. I bit the bullet and replaced the ink a couple of times. 

One time, I tried cheaper non-original ink cartridges to save money. Someone recommended them, but it also cautioned me as it could be a hit or miss. It was a total miss for me. While I did save some money on the cartridge itself, the printing was totally off. 

I also tried going to Staples, a printing store. But while the quality was good, it was quite expensive and time-consuming. Having a toddler and a baby, time is money. So this was not something I could keep doing. 

Every time I create a new worksheet, whether it’s FREE (for my resource library) or paid, like my Modern Calligraphy Workbook for beginners, I like to print it and test it to make the appropriate arrangements. 

As you can see in the video below, I was using black and white copies, because I needed to save money. 

One day I decided to look for another printer that had more affordable ink. And that’s when I came across the HP instant ink program. This time, buying a whole new printer was WAY cheaper than buying ink for my old printer!!! Yes, I scored this HP ENVY 5055 Wireless All-in-One Photo Printer for less than $60. The ink for my old printer was over $60.

Can you believe that? I could get this brand new printer cheaper than actual ink? And on top of that, I could get FREE printing!!!  It was a no-brainer! 

Let me share a little bit more about this program.

WHAT IS THE HP INSTANT INK PROGRAM?

HP Instant Ink is a printing service program based on pages you print, not cartridges. You choose a plan based on the number of pages you like to print monthly.

You get replacement cartridges when your printer tells HP you need more ink.

The plans are flexible and can be changed at any time based on your printing needs.

IS THIS PLAN REALLY WORTH IT?

I have to say, I was skeptical at first. I mean, it sounded too good to be true. I’ve been using this service since April this year. I didn’t want to say anything until I’ve been using it for a while and sure it was actually worth it. 

While I was working on my Modern Calligraphy workbook, I had to print A LOT! I wanted to make sure my book was well written and that it communicated an easier way to learn calligraphy. So I had to do a lot of printing and editing. 

This service is a game-changer for me and that’s why I’m sharing it with you today!

It’s totally worth it.

It definitely passed my printing test with flying colors (lol, see what I did there?)

HOW DOES THE HP INSTANT INK PROGRAM WORK?

STEP 1. GET AN HP INSTANT INK PRINTER

You need an HP printer that can connect to the internet to use HP Instant Ink. I’m bought an HP ENVY 5055 Wireless All-in-One Photo Printer. It was on sale when I bought it, but even at a regular price, it’s still very affordable. The printing quality is excellent for me. It is a little bit slow to print, but I’m usually not in a rush when I print. 

STEP 2. CHOOSE YOUR PLAN

Once you have your Hp Instant ink printer, you need to pick your plan. Just go to their website here. It’s super quick and easy. 

Their lowest plan is actually FREE!

This is perfect for you if you only print a couple of times a month. 

Another way to get free printing is by referring your friends. If you sign up through my link, I get a month free. But that’s not why I’m sharing this with you today. I’m letting you know of this service because I believe it’s a time and money saver!

I currently use the Occasional Printing Plan.

When I was working on my Modern Calligraphy Workbook, I had the Moderate Printing Plan. If you were to use this plan to print my workbook, it will cost you less than $4 to print the whole 77 pages! That’s less than 5 cents per page!

Your unused prints will roll over to the next month. But do make sure to use your roll-over prints, because they won’t roll indefinitely.

Another thing to consider is that it doesn’t matter if you print a full page loaded with color or just one line of black and white text on a 4×6″ card. Each one still counts as one print. Obviously, this won’t work for you if you print small items with just a tiny amount of black text. This was definitely not my case.

This is a HUGE advantage if you print lots of colorful things.

STEP 3: WAIT FOR THE INK TO COME IN THE MAIL

The ink comes pretty quick. Once you sign up, HP will mail you new cartridges right away. If you get a new printer, the starter cartridges that come with it last for quite a long time. 

This program automatically monitors your ink status and mails you new ink before you need it. 

The new ink arrives long before I’m even running low. I recommend and wait to install the new cartridge until your current one actually DOES run out.

Another thing that I love about this program is that they provide postage-paid envelopes for you to return used ink cartridges for recycling.

If you’re looking for an affordable way to print your calligraphy worksheets to practice and still save money, this plan is for you. You can print so many beautiful and colorful things without worrying about spending too much ink!
