Supplies You’ll Need for this DIY Hand-Lettered Card
Mother’s Day is sneaking upon us once again! And as you know, I love a good DIY hand-lettered Mother’s Day card. I made this beautiful flower doodle wreath in a heart shape you can check on this blog post.
As always, if you don’t have enough time to practice and make your own cards, grab this one from the blog here. I designed it using watercolor flower elements and a gorgeous asymmetric frame with my Mother’s Day calligraphy on the inside of the frame. You can grab the FREE printable from the blog post.
The DIY card I’m sharing with you today’s been out there for a bit. I created this card last year and shared the video over on Pinterest!
The video tutorial has gone viral since then, but I never shared a step-by-step tutorial to create the banner and Mother’s Day DIY Card. This year, I decided to change that and topping the card with a cherry on top, I’m giving you access to a printable to help you make drawing the banner doodle easier.
MOTHER’S DAY DIY CARD STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL
STEP 1: with a pencil, draw a continuous “S” shape.
Using a pencil, draw a continuous “S” shape keeping in mind the length and size you want your banner doodle to be.
STEP 2: draw another continuous “S” shape parallel to the one before.
Leave about half an inch below the beginning of your first “S” shape and draw another one parallel to it.
You can leave more or less space in between the shapes. It all depends on how thick you want your banner to be.
STEP 3: Using a monoline pen connect the 2 shapes.
Using a monoline pen or any other pen of your choice, start tracing over the 2 shapes you draw and connect them to form the banner as shown in the picture below.
Connect both shapes with lines and close the ends with horizontal “V” shapes on either end of the banner doodle.
I’m using a Tombow Mono Drawing Pen 03.
Once you finish tracing, erase all the pencil marks.
STEP 3: Add details to the banner
In this case, I decided to add lines across the back part of the banner. This will help you give more dimension and character to your banner.
You can also paint this part completely as I did for the Father’s Day Card version of this card.
STEP 4: Draw floral doodles
To complement this card for Mother’s Day, draw floral doodles at the top and bottom of the banner.
You can draw more floral doodles if you like, just remember to not overdo it and for the doodles to be equally distributed around the banner drawing.

This is where you can get creative with your card! You can use this design for other occasions than Mother’s Day – like birthdays, graduations, thinking of you, and so many other occasions.
Step 5: add the sentiment to your card using calligraphy
Now it’s time to incorporate your calligraphy into this beautiful Mother’s Day DIY card!
I used a white gelly roll pen to write “Happy Mother’s Day” in modern calligraphy. You can use the same pen you were using before. I just love how the white pen contrast with the black ribbon banner and floral doodles against the kraft paper.
