A Step-by-Step Guide to Bubble Lettering

Step 1: Write the letter in basic block lettering.

Start by lightly drawing the basic structure of your letter using a pencil. Think of it like a simple block letter or a “skeleton” for your design. [01:15]

Step 2: Draw the Outline.

Draw an outline around your base letter using rounded edges. This is where the “bubble” comes to life! You can make your letters as chunky or as thin as you like, depending on your preference [01:36].

Step 3: Refine the Details.

Once you’re happy with the outer shape, add the center details. For letters like “A” or “O,” you can keep the centers as simple triangles or circles, or even curve the sides for a more playful look [02:12].

Step 4: Ink and Finish!

Trace over your final pencil lines with a pen. If you’re using a gel pen, give it a moment to dry so it doesn’t smear [02:47]. After the ink is dry, erase your pencil marks to reveal your clean bubble letter!

Ways to Make Your Bubble Lettering Stand Out

Once you have the basics down, you can really make your letters vibrant with a few extra techniques:

  • Add Shadows: To give your letters a 3D effect, add a shadow line to the right and slightly below each stroke. [05:29].
  • Use Color and Glitter: Filling your letters with bright colors or glitter pens adds instant personality [06:19].
  • Add Highlights: Small white lines or dots near the top of your letters can make them look like they are shiny or reflecting light [06:59].

Writing the Bubble Lettering Alphabet in Uppercase

Before you start writing full words and making bubble lettering designs, I recommend you spend some time practicing the full bubble lettering alphabet as many times as possible. Practicing the lettering individually will help you create the muscle memory you need to start drawing full words and phrases.

Writing Full Words with Bubble Lettering

When you’re ready to write words, try overlapping your letters slightly to create a cohesive, bubbly look. I always suggest starting with short words like “love” or “joy” while you find your rhythm [08:06].
