What is Bounce Lettering?

Bounce lettering is a fun creative style of hand lettering where the letters appear to bounce and have varying heights and positions.

Bounce lettering is a very loose and free style of modern script.

Bounce lettering aims to create a visually interesting and dynamic composition where the letters appear to bounce around in a playful and irregular manner.

This lettering style is perfect for – bullet journals, planners, prints, cards, you name it!

Things to Consider

  • Even though this is a tutorial for beginners, make sure you have mastered regular lettering or modern calligraphy.
  • You need to understand the basics of modern calligraphy, the thick downstrokes, and the thin upstrokes.
  • You want to make sure you have developed the muscle memory to create each letter of the alphabet so that you can add the playfulness of bounce lettering.

With that in mind, let’s start creating bounce lettering…

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1: Choose a word or phrase to bounce. Decide which word or phrase you want to create in bounce lettering. Start with shorter words or phrases when you’re just beginning.

Step 2 Make sure you have a baseline: Draw a light horizontal line as a baseline for your letters. This will help you maintain consistency in the overall alignment of your letters.

Step 3 Bounce the letters: Decide which letters and how you’ll be bouncing the letters. Most of the letters will either “bounce” above the baseline or dip below it.

  • The vowel letters as well as the body part of the letters should stay smaller.
  • The downstrokes should be nice and long.
