What is Bounce Lettering?

Bounce lettering is a fun, creative style of hand lettering where the letters appear to bounce and have varying heights and positions.ย

Bounce lettering is a very loose and free style of modern script.

Bounce lettering aims to create a visually interesting and dynamic composition where the letters bounce around playfully and irregularly.

This lettering style is perfect for –ย bullet journals, planners, prints, and cards. You name it!

MY FAVORITE PENS FOR BOUNCE LETTERING

  • Small tip brush pen: Zebra Funwari Brush Pen. I recommend a small tip for beginners because these pens are easier to control.
  • Smooth Paper. I recommend HP 32lb Printer paper or a Rhodia Pad-Dot Grid. Since you’re using brush pens, make sure your paper is smooth enough to protect the tip of your pens.
  • Optional but Highly Suggested: My Confident Bounce Lettering Workbook. This workbook is designed to help you do bounce lettering step by step with tons of practice words and phrases and fantastic layouts.

Things to Consider

  • Even though this is a tutorial for beginners, make sure you have mastered regular lettering or modern calligraphy.
  • You need to understand the basics of modern calligraphy, the thick downstrokes and the thin upstrokes.ย
  • You want to make sure you have developed the muscle memory to create each letter of the alphabet to add the playfulness of bounce lettering.ย

With that in mind, let’s start creating bounce letteringโ€ฆ

Step-by-Step Bounce Lettering Tutorial

Step 1: Choose a word or phrase to bounce.

Decide which word or phrase you want to create in bounce lettering. Start with shorter words or phrases when you’re beginning.
