WATERCOLOR BOTANICAL DIY BOOKMARKS – STEP BY STEP TUTORIAL
I love doodling florals and I’m diving into watercolor. So why not put them together to create beautiful watercolor botanical bookmarks!
Let’s dive in…
Step 1: Stat with the Watercolor Background
If you have a big piece of paper like mine, first go ahead and cut the paper to your desired bookmark size.
I’ve seen a lot of different sizes online and this will come to your personal preference. I cut these bookmarks 2 1/2 inches wide by 6 inches long.
To start the watercolor background first, do a layer of water using your brush.
Then, using the water-based marker of your choice, start adding some color on top of your water layer.
After this, you can add more water or use more color from your marker. The more color you use, the more saturated your watercolor background will be. On the other hand, if you want a lighter watercolor background, add more water.
Once you’re satisfied with how your watercolor background looks, make sure you let it dry completely.
PRO TIPS:
- Use a rag or paper towel to remove the excess water or watercolor.
- Use a heat gun to help speed up the drying process. This is super helpful when you’re short on time or you’re impatient like me and want your watercolors to try as fast as possible. Run the heat gun through the back to the paper as the water tends to curve the paper a bit.
Step 2: Sketch the Floral Doodles
I recommend you sketch this part on another piece of paper or practice beforehand if this is the first time you’re drawing floral doodles. Practicing beforehand will help you with spacing within the bookmark.

Once you’ve practiced your flower doodles and greenery, it’s time to sketch them in your watercolor bookmark.
Since we have the watercolor background, be sure to draw lightly with your pencil.
Using the kneaded eraser to slightly erase the pencil marks. This will help you see your sketch without the pencil marks being too noticeable.
After you’re done sketching, it’s time to outline your floral doodles. I’m using the Monoline Studio Pen 03. Be sure to only do the outline using this pen.
Now, add the greenery details and flower shading using the monoline 01 pen.
OPTIONAL: Repeat the steps above to create different watercolor and botanical drawing bookmarks
Here I’m showing your two other different watercolor backgrounds you can make for your bookmarks.
Using only two different types of flower doodles and two different types of greenery, you can combine them to create different botanical drawing compositions for your bookmarks.
This is a super easy watercolor flower doodle bookmark idea you can turn into different designs!
Stop 3: Add Tassels to your DIY Watercolor Botanical Bookmarks
Using a hole puncher, punch a hole on one end of the bookmark. I’m using this cute star hole puncher for mine. There are some heart and circle hole punchers as well.
Insert the tassel in the whole leaving a little hole in the hassle itself to pull through the remaining part of the tassel.
That’s it! That is how easy you can create watercolor botanical bookmarks!
These turned out beautiful and will be the perfect gift for any book lover in your life.
What ya think?
You can go a step further and laminate them if you want them to have a longer life or if you think they’ll be used a lot.
My house will be full of bookmarks from now on!
