In case you were wondering…

Why handmade cards are worth your time

Hand-made cards are more than just “pretty paper” — they’re tiny acts of connection.

  • They show someone you cared enough to spend a few minutes creating something special.
  • They give you a chance to slow down, be creative, and reflect (which is great for journaling and mindful crafting).
  • For the bullet-journal and lettering lovers out there — you get bonus practice! Faux calligraphy, doodles, layout decisions… It’s all part of the fun.

Step-by-step: How to make the “Happy Thanksgiving DIY card

how to make a Thanksgiving card using calligraphy and doodles

1. Choose your card size & fold

Decide whether you want a classic A5 or another size. My card measures 7in x 5in folded. But you can choose whatever size you want, keeping in mind the envelope you’ll be using to send the card.

2. Pick the fall doodles you’ll be drawing in your wreath

I’m only using 4 fall leaf doodles, I’ll be repeating around the circle.

3. Sketch your layout lightly in pencil

Using the angle and circle maker, I’m lightly sketching a circle in the center of my card. You can use any other round object that matches the circle you want to make.

I prefer using the angle and circle maker because it makes it easier to create circles of any kind.

4. Create your fall doodle wreath

Now it’s time to draw the fall doodles you selected in step 2. Make sure to keep in mind the circle shape you sketched in the previous step.

5. Write “Happy Thanksgiving” in modern calligraphy

I’m choosing to write “Happy Thanksgiving” in modern calligraphy and adding a few flourishes to the lettering. You can choose to write any sentiment inside the fall wreath.

I recommend you sketch the sentiment with a pencil first. You want to make sure that your hand lettering fits and it’s centered within the doodle wreath before you go over it with the brush pen.

6. Add decorative elements

Erase the pencil marks gently once the ink is fully dry.

I decided to add a line shadow to the hand-lettered sentiment. I also added dots and small circles around the doodle wreath to add more flair and make it even more beautiful.
