How to Make DIY Bookmarks with Simple Floral Doodles

If you are looking for an easy way to practice floral doodles and relax while doing it, you are in the right place. Doodling is my absolute favorite mindful exercise. It’s not just about making pretty art—it’s a low-stakes activity that helps your brain hit the reset button, reduces stress, and just makes you feel good.

These floral doodles are perfect for DIY bookmarks, but you could easily use these same doodle techniques to add some creative flair to your journal pages or planners.

Let’s grab our supplies and get into it!

SUPPLIES YOU’LL NEED

DIY Doodle Bookmarks Step-by-Step

If you’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed lately, this is the perfect project for you. Doodling is such a great mindful exercise—it’s low-pressure, super relaxing, and actually helps your brain hit the reset button. Plus, research shows it even helps with memory, which is a nice little bonus!

Step 1. Cut your bookmarks

Start by cutting your bookmark paper down to size. The standard bookmark size is usually around 2 inches x 6 inches (5cm x 15cm), but you can do whatever bookmark size you’d like.

Tip: If you want a perfectly clean border around the edge, use a low-tack tape to border the outline of your bookmark before you start doodling.

Step 2: The Floral and Leaf Combination Design

First, we’ll create a more diverse and colorful floral doodle bookmark.

  1. Start with The Big Flowers: I like to start at the corner of the bookmark. I start with the stem, then add branches. I finish by doodling leaves at the end of the branches. I’m using simple five-petal flowers here. Doodling flowers is a fantastic mindful art exercise because the basic shapes are so calming.
  2. Add Variety: Add complementary floral doodles (like yellow buds), different leaf shapes (like the pointed, thin teal leaves shown). For the second flower on this bookmark, I made the leaves more elongated.
  3. Fill in any blank space with smaller greenery. The goal is to make the composition feel balanced and full.

Step 3. The Greenery Leaf Pattern Design

This is a great, simple greenery pattern to practice repetitive doodling.

  1. Start with one greenery doodle in the corner. First, draw a stem. Then add branches and leaves to the end of the branches.
  2. Keep Doodling: Keep adding stems branching off from the main one, and fill them with leaves. Don’t worry about being perfect. The beauty of leaf doodles is that they look best when they vary!
  3. Mix and Match Greens: I love using two or three different shades of green to add more depth to the greenery doodle pattern.

And you are done! Two beautiful, handmade bookmarks that are ready to go in your next book or journal.

If you want to take it a step further, you can add your favorite quote in calligraphy or hand lettering.
