DIY Card with Embossed Lettering and Watercolor Florals
I created this DIY card tutorial for Mother’s Day, which is around the corner. However, I understand that Mother’s Day looks different for everyone, and you might not want to create one for this day.
What’s great about this tutorial is that you can follow the same steps to create a card for any occasion; birthdays, anniversaries, thank you cards, special events, you name it!

Tools You Need to Make this DIY Card
This Watercolor and Embossed DIY Card Step-by-Step
Step 1: Sketch the floral doodles around the card’s border using a pencil.
For this card, I’m doing four types of greenery and one type of flower doodle. These flower doodles are super simple and easy to make.
Make sure you leave enough space in the middle of your card to write your sentiment.
Using the kneaded eraser, erase most of the pencil sketch that you did. This is important so the pencil marks aren’t noticeable once you add the watercolors.
Step 2: Use the watercolors to paint the floral doodles.
PRO TIPS:
- Tape down your paper using either washi tape or painter’s tape. This will help you keep the paper in place and avoid curving once you start adding the watercolors.
- Pick the colors you’ll be using on the card beforehand. Make a color swatch with the watercolors you’ll be using to paint your floral doodles. You want to make sure you like the colors before you start painting.
Grab a cup with water and keep it handy. Dip your brush in the water, then grab the watercolor you’d like to use. The more saturated you want the watercolor in your card, the more watercolor you’ll use. The less vibrant you want the color, add more water.
Make sure you have a rag or a paper towel handy. The paper tower will help you remove the excess water from your paper.
Wait until your watercolor is completely dry before you move it into the next step.
If you have any watercolor smudges, you can use the sand eraser to gently remove the watercolor.
Erase the remaining pencil marks from your floral doodle sketch.
Step 3: Outline the floral doodles using a monoline pen.
I’m using the Pigeon Letters Monoline Studio pen 05 to do the outside outline of the flower doodles and the 03 to do the inside details.
Step 4: Emboss your lettering.
I recommend you sketch your Mother’s Day sentiment beforehand to make sure everything fits and you have the layout that you like.
I’m lettering Happy Mother’s Day using Faux Calligraphy using the embossing pen.
For a detailed step-by-step tutorial on how to heat emboss your lettering, check out this blog post.
Once your lettering is done, cover the word with the embossing powder.
Make sure the word is completely saturated with the embossing powder. Then, you can remove the excess powder by putting a scrap piece of paper underneath and tapping the card so the powder comes off.
Go ahead and put the powder back into the container. You can use this powder again for your next project.
If you want to learn everything about Faux Calligraphy, be sure to check my workbook where I give you a step-by-step guide to learning calligraphy using a regular pen.
Now, grab your heat gun, turn it on, and let it heat up for a few seconds.
Put the heat gun about 3 inches from the paper and let the heat start doing its magic and activate the beautiful shine of the embossing powder.
I decided to only do the heat embossing technique on the word “Mother’s” because I wanted to accentuate it.
Step 5: Finish lettering your sentiment.
For the rest of the sentiment, “Happy” and “Day” I’m using the Tombow Fudenosuke Brush pen in the hard tip and I’m doing my personal block lettering style for the lettering.
Step 6 (optional): Paste your card onto a kraft paper card for extra pizzazz!
The kraft card measures 7in x 5in folded.
Add double-sided tape to the back of the Mother’s Day Card we made and paste it into the center of the kraft card.
This is the final result! What do you think of this DIY Mother’s Day Card?
